The ultimate guide to Algarve's beaches

Algarve's beaches are seriously some of the best in Europe. Soft, golden sand like superfine sugar, and all sorts of beaches to choose from – hidden coves or huge stretches perfect for surfers. Plus, the dramatic honey-colored cliffs and tons of sunshine make it a picture-perfect paradise.

The best part? You can find the perfect beach for whatever you're in the mood for. Want to try kite surfing? There's a beach for that. Just want to relax and soak up the sun? You got it. Foodies will find their happy place here too. Every kind of traveler has a spot waiting for them in the Algarve.

In this article, we'll cover everything you need to know about the best beaches in Algarve, Portugal, from secret spots accessible only by boat to lively beaches with all the bells and whistles. We'll even give you some tips on kayaking and where to find the best food, the coolest water sports, and the most breathtaking cliff walks.

Let’s dive in.

Carvoeiro Beach is a lively beach right in the heart of the charming fishing village. Surrounded by the dramatic rock formations of Algar Seco, this small but popular beach offers something for everyone.

You get to see cute whitewashed fishermen's houses lining the beach, with colorful boats that once bobbed at sea but now take tourists on scenic coastal tours. The waters are calm and clean, perfect for a relaxing swim.
Praia do Carvoeiro isn't just about that though. There are tons of cafes, bars, and restaurants nearby, where you can dine and soak up the atmosphere.

1. Praia do Carvoeiro

If you are seeking something more, take a boat tour to experience amazing cave interiors. This beach gets crowded in peak season, so come early to find a good spot and enjoy a fun-filled day.

There are loads of other things you can do in Carvoeiro

Did you know that the Penthouse Atlântico overlooks Praia do Carvoeiro? The views from this apartment are breathtaking. With its central location in the Algarve, it serves as an ideal base for exploring the region. Want to book? Do it here.
Did you know?

Praia do Vale de Centeanes is of high interest to people who want to soak all the shiny sun goodness on the beach. This long, but narrow beach is nestled between Carvoeiro and the famous Algar de Benagil cave.

The golden sand feels soft under your feet with dramatic golden cliffs behind you, sheltering you from the wind. The sand is perfect for a walk with stunning ocean views, and the cliffs around the beach have been eroded over time, creating cool cave-like structures.

2. Praia do Vale de Centeanes

But the real star here is the 6km cliff hike. Considered one of the best in the Algarve, the Percurso dos Sete Vales Suspensos (Seven Hanging Valleys) trail takes you on a breathtaking journey, eventually leading you to another Algarve site — Praia do Marinha.

Praia de Vale de Centeanes is also a great spot for swimming, but keep in mind the water can get deep quickly, so only experienced swimmers should attempt it. If you need a break, accommodation places like Casa Brisa, which is right on top of the hill, are close by. It’s the perfect place to stay and relax.

The beach can get crowded in the summer, but we recommend that you arrive early to claim the best spot. Do not miss the opportunity to visit this heavenly place.

As mentioned earlier, the Seven Hanging Valleys Trail leads you to Praia da Marinha, one of the Algarve's (and maybe even Portugal's) most stunning beaches. You can also start this hike from Praia da Marinha and make your way towards Praia de Vale Centeanes. If the thought of walking back to your starting point is daunting, you can always opt for a convenient Uber ride back to where you left your car.

Imagine spending the day at this beach while overlooking soft, golden sand nestled between gorgeous cliffs, with calm, clear waters perfect for swimming (bring your own gear though, there's no rental nearby).

The cliffs themselves are pretty amazing, with cool rock formations that some folks say look like the letter M – like a giant, natural cathedral. Just keep in mind, getting down to the beach involves a long staircase. It might be a bit tiring for young kids or older folks, but the view from the top is totally worth it.

3. Praia da Marinha

Calling all lovebirds! Praia do Carvalho might just be the most romantic beach in the Algarve. This beach feels straight out of a fairytale. Imagine walking through a tunnel carved into a cliff, and then you emerge through a beautiful opening onto a secluded paradise.

A giant rock stands guard in the middle of the water, adding to the drama. The cliffs cast a shadow over the beach in the afternoon, so if you're planning a full day, snag a spot on the left side for maximum sunshine.

4. Praia do Carvalho

For more adventure, take a cliff walk along the trail that connects to Praia de Vale Centeanes and even Carvoeiro, passing by the Alfanzina lighthouse.

Pro tip: We also have some recommendations if you want to try kayaking or paddleboarding under the guidance of true locals, like Brotherootzs Sup Tours. With their expert guidance, you can have every bit of fun exploring hidden coves and soaking up the Algarve sunshine without worrying about safety. Praia dos Beijinhos might be a small, but a perfect getaway for romantics. This little gem isn't just called "Little Kisses Beach" for no reason. The soft sand, golden cliffs, and the cutest seashells you've ever seen.

Getting to the beach involves a bit of a steep climb down some stairs, but you’ll totally love the view once you reach the destination. There are also some cool rock formations to explore, and lots of birds chirping. A perfect scene — can’t get better than this!

5. Praia dos Beijinhos

Praia da Cova Redonda is a charming, secluded beach tucked away at the foot of a dramatic cliff, complete with cool rock formations in the water. Getting down involves a bit of a journey - a long staircase with 100 steps!

Once you're down on the beach, the cliffs shelter you from the wind, and the water is usually calm and shallow around a big rock in the middle. This beach is also great for swimming in the clear blue water. Lifeguards are even on duty during peak season to keep everyone safe.

There's a small kiosk near the entrance, called Eco Beach bar, with some refreshing drinks and snacks.

6. Praia da Cova Redonda

Praia da Luz isn't just a beach, it's a charming seaside fishing town with the bonus of sandy beach, wonderful climate, and heavenly food. Located 6km west of Lagos, this little beach is a perfect destination that offers a good mix of relaxation and activity.

Praia da Luz or Beach of Light has a beautiful sandy bay with soft, yellow sand – perfect for sinking your toes in and strolling along the shore. The beach can get lively in the summer, but it's never as crowded as some other Algarve spots.

Lunch tip: Zazu Beach Club.

7. Praia da Luz

On your way to the famous Ponta de Piedade near the town of Lagos, Praia do Camilo is un-arguably one of the most beautiful beaches in Algarve, Portugal. The first glimpse and the entry to this beach is nothing short of a fairytale: A long wooden staircase (about 200 steps) leads down between cliffs, and then — boom! A gorgeous little beach reveals itself. It's pretty small and even shrinks at high tide, but the dramatic golden cliffs of Ponta da Piedade surrounding it are pure beauty. They also act as a windshield, making it a peaceful spot.

8. Praia do Camilo

There's even a cool tunnel under the rocks that connects two small sections of the beach. Be aware, though, Praia do Camilo can get quite crowded, especially during the summer months. So, come early during the day to grab a spot.

Basically, if you're in Lagos, Praia do Camilo is a must-visit.

Praia da Arrifana, just 6 kilometers from the historic town of Aljezur, is a southwestern Algarve beach that will steal your heart. This long, but narrow beach, we’d say, about half a kilometer, is unlike any other in the region.

Imagine soft, golden sand nestled between dramatic black cliffs and traditional whitewashed houses — a picture-perfect postcard scene. The rock formations here are particularly interesting, and the sand is perfect for a romantic stroll along the shore.

9. Praia da Arrifana

The water is super clean and surfing is huge here, thanks to the consistent waves. If you're a beginner, Arrifana Surf School is the place to learn. Just keep in mind the water can be chilly, so a wetsuit is recommended.

The high cliffs also make this a popular spot for diving and hiking. Nature lovers will love the trails that offer stunning views. And stay alert for Pedra da Agulha (Needle Rock) standing proudly in the water.

After a day of beach fun, refuel at one of the amazing restaurants nearby. O Paulo or CAL are all popular options. Whenever you are planning to visit the Algarve, definitely pay a visit to Praia da Arrifana.

Praia do Amado, located on the west coast of the Algarve, is surrounded by low grassy hills and cliffs and comprises rich golden sands, offering a variety of experiences for visitors.

It’s not a beach with lots of facilities for families, it’s a secluded spot that is known for its consistent waves really popular with surfers. And for good reasons. The beach faces west and catches a lot of swells, perfect for both beginner and experienced surfers. But winter waves can be dangerous, so be cautious if you're new to surfing.

10. Praia do Amado

And if you’re new to surfing, you can book surf lessons right on the beach. Plus, there are surfboard, wetsuit, and bodyboard rentals available by the hour if you want to give it a go

Getting to the beach is easy. Short, well-maintained wooden stairs wind down from the clifftop. Up there, you'll find a big car park (perfect if you bring your car). During the summer months, a few refreshment stalls pop up near the car park, and you can even rent surfboards, beach chairs, and umbrellas for a fun day at the beach.

Just an 8-minute drive away is Praia da Bordeira, where you can hike a challenging 4.6-mile loop trail. And if you head 35 minutes north, there’s another beach, Praia da Arrifana. This makes Praia do Amado the perfect base to explore all three beaches in a single-day trip.

Praia da Bordeira is another west coast beach that’s located in a secluded spot. It has a remote feel to it and therefore, is also a favorite among surfers.

Praia da Bordeira faces northwest and catches a lot of swells, making it a favorite for both beginners and experienced surfers. Depending on the season and the swell, you can find gentle waves perfect for learning or challenging waves for seasoned riders.

11. Praia da Bordeira

The beach is also famous for its beautiful scenery, with stunning views of the Atlantic Ocean from the cliff-top viewpoint. On the south side, a river creates a calm lagoon with shallow water, perfect for a safe and relaxing dip.

The beach offers a range of amenities, especially during the summer months, when beach bars serves refreshing drinks, coffee, and snacks to keep you full.

Rest assured, the beach offers plenty of space, so you never feel crowded. If you're spending several days in the Algarve, consider staying overnight in the nearby town of Aljezur. This charming location serves as a perfect base to explore not only Praia da Bordeira but also to venture further to the picturesque Praia do Odeceixe the following day.
