The Seven Hanging Valleys Trail is an awesome hiking trail, famous for its stunning coastal scenery, with dramatic cliffs made of limestone. The hike starts at Miradouro Vale Centeanes and ends at Praia da Marinha. But the beauty is – it's a loop. You can actually start your adventure from the other end at Praia da Marinha too. It's a great way to experience the beauty of Portugal's nature on foot! And if you feel tired, you can grab an Uber back to your starting point.
Explore the stunning caves in the Algarve via boat, kayak, or SUP, discovering hidden beaches and additional caves along the way.
Kayaking allows you to get an intimate experience of the region and access secluded spots. For kayaking or paddling these guys can help you. They are a local tour group based in the Algarve that offers guided tours including kayaking, paddleboarding. They'll be your local guides, showing you the best spots, and making it a trip, you’ll never forget.
For more adventure, hop on a dolphin-watching boat tour to see playful marine life in their natural habitat. These experiences showcase the Algarve's dramatic sea caves and rich biodiversity, providing amazing lifelong memories.
Here’s our recommendation. If you’re staying in Carvoeiro (and you should), it would take you around 1 hour to reach Praia do Amado. Catch some morning rides or soak up the sun, then hop in the car for a quick 8-minute drive to Praia da Bordeira. Here if you want, you can hike a challenging 4.6-mile loop trail.
Want to keep moving? Head 35 minutes north to Praia da Arrifana. This beach is lined with fantastic restaurants where you can grab a delicious lunch and refuel for the afternoon.
If you’re considering extending this plan, travel to Praia do Odeceixe which is around 45 minutes further north. This is another stunning beauty, perfect for exploring nature at your own pace.
The rugged Algarve's West Coast is completely different compared to the southern part of the Algarve. It offers a thrilling escape for surfers, hikers, and anyone seeking an off-the-beaten-path experience.
The most famous points here are Praia do Amado, Praia da Arrifana, Praia da Bordeira, and Praia do Odeceixe. The best thing is, that they’re all reachable from Carvoeiro, making it easy to plan a one-day itinerary and explore the wild west coast in all its glory.

Explore the Algarve’s charming villages, each offering a taste of local life and stunning scenery. In places like Burgau, Carvoeiro, Tavira, Ferragudo, and Lagos, you’ll find cobblestone streets lined with shops, cozy cafes, and traditional restaurants. These peaceful spots invite you to relax, enjoy the local culture, and take in the views. Some towns you should visit are:
Carvoeiro is a charming coastal village in the Algarve known for its stunning beaches, dramatic cliffs, and relaxed atmosphere. For a relaxing beach day, visit Praia do Carvoeiro, a small, picturesque sandy bay nestled between two limestone cliffs. Carvoeiro is very lively, with a lot of good restaurants and shops.
Ferragudo is a small, yet mighty village located on the banks of the River Arade. We’d say that the best way to explore the beauty of this village is by foot. Some things to do here would be wandering the cobbled streets. Every corner is like a postcard, so bring your camera. Or, if you need a break from exploring, visit, Praia dos Caneiros.
Lagos is another fascinating town in the Algarve region. You can explore Lagos’ Old Town with its cobbled streets and historic sites. Or for a change of pace, visit Ponta da Piedade, which is a 4-minute car ride from Lagos town center. It’s a headland with a cluster of rock formations above the Atlantic Ocean, a fascinating tourist attraction.
After all that exploring, you must be hungry — and here’s a spoiler: the food is going to be so good! No trip to the Algarve is complete without indulging in its exceptional food scene. From fresh seafood served at beachside restaurants to traditional Portuguese dishes. Don’t forget to sample the region’s famous pastries, like pastel de nata, and pair your meal with a glass of local wine for the full experience. Now just because we have been only talking about stunning beaches of Algarve, doesn't mean that’s the only thing you can do in Algarve. Here are some other sporty activities you can do in the region.
Exploring the coastline of the Algarve on foot is a great experience. The Seven Hanging Trail is super popular. And you can do a mini hike at Algar Seco, starting from Carvoeiro. But honestly, you can hike pretty much anywhere along the coast. We've covered the best hikes in the Algarve.
The western part of the Algarve arguably offers the best base for surfing, especially Arrifana, Aljezur, and Sagres, which are popular destinations for surfers. The wind is favorable and the swell window is ample. Plus, there are plenty of long reliable waves, all of which make the area highly favorable for surfing. Don't worry if you're a beginner – numerous experienced surf schools in the area can get you riding waves in no time.
The Algarve might not be the first place that pops into your mind when you think of horse riding. But for horse lovers, the region offers some truly unforgettable experiences. We recommend visiting Quinta Lusitana in the Algarve for an expert-level horse riding experience. You can check them out here.
Padel is another fun and energetic way to spend the afternoon if you’re done relaxing and soaking in the sun. If you head to Carvoeiro Clube de Ténis, they have 4 floodlit padel courts to play this sport.
These two beach clubs offer serious relaxation with plush sun loungers, refreshing cocktails, and great food. Simply relax and listen to the soothing sound of the waves.
People’s favorite, Edd’s Beach Club, is situated on the stunning Praia do Pintadinho in Ferragudo. This beach club is the perfect spot to unwind by the sea, offering a relaxed and vibrant atmosphere. With comfortable seating, a beautiful beachfront location, and refreshing cocktails, it’s a great place to soak up the Algarve's sun.
Another beach club recommendation is NoSoloÁgua in Portimão. This place exudes elegance and luxury, with its sunbeds shaded with umbrellas and great decor. There are live music performances, great ambiance, and incredible sea views. If you’d like to enjoy this atmosphere with drinks, they have a wide selection of refreshing natural juices and cocktails.
If you’re planning a trip to the Algarve, and you love wine (or even if you just enjoy a glass every now and then), you have to experience the region’s wineries.
Quinta dos Santos, Arvad Wine and Quinta dos Vales are excellent choices.
Algarve comes alive at night. You can dance at beach parties, sip on refreshing cocktails, explore the night markets, or just walk along the streets. Below are some of our suggestions to experience the Algarve by night.
Porches is a typical (very little) Portuguese village in Algarve. If you’re there around nighttime, consider having dinner at O Leao de Porches or A Rolha. O Leao de Porches is a fine dining restaurant with plenty of charisma while A Rolha is a lovely wine bar.
For a taste of traditional Portugal, Silves is a must-visit at night. We’d suggest that start your evening with an aperitif at Café Inglês, right next to Silves Castle, who will light up by night. Then, head to Marisqueira Rui for a delicious dinner — their seafood is the bomb.
At night, Carvoeiro has a cozy charm. The soft, golden lights and gentle music from cafes create a warm atmosphere, perfect for dining out in the village and enjoying local flavors in a relaxed setting.
If partying is more your thing, Lagos is the place to go. Many bars and venues in Lagos host parties for all crowds. Plus, there are lots lively dive bars, and dance clubs that entertain both locals and tourists alike late into the wee hours.
If you’re staying in Carvoeiro, and you need to travel to Lagos, use ride-sharing apps like Uber. Car rentals are another option but for quick, spontaneous plans, just book a ride to Lagos and Uber will take you there and back home too.
